As an absolute outsider whats the best way to get into Touhou? I only know some of the charaters from memes but nothing outside of that and that needs to be changed. They are cute tho, in spite of not knowing what she is like I think suika is cute.

I started by playing all the games in order, although most people will probably want to skip the first 5 games. If danmaku is not your thing, there are mangas, albums, and an infinitude of fan content, I think everyone likes Touhou for a different reason, so you just need explore and find what you like.

>>1712 play one of the games, one of the fangames, read one of the many many doujin works, fanfics, or really anything that would endear you the universe the games take place in the music is good too - unless you dislike midi trumpets, then it might not be for you i got into the games from newgrounds remixes of some of touhou 8's boss themes, then a slew of ao3 fics taking place in the games' universe, before i finally bothered with any of the shmups. maybe give #7 or #8 a go, solely because they're my favourites that aren't hard to the point of frustration. shift to focus, z to shoot and x to bomb - think fast don't die, maybe you'll find them fun anyhow there's a nyaa torrent with each of the english patched games in it, plus the first 5 pc98 games, if you're so inclined. just pick one and try to beat it

Touhou 6 EoSD is the first game I started with. Then after hearing the music of Mountain of Faith (Touhou 10) I started playing that too. I was there more for the music rather than the gameplay since I got bored of Touhou after only 2 games in the series. That being said, the music and Japanese mythology make it worth it to play. (I couldn't give two shits about the whole lore though, that's for the fandom to care about - not the people who actually play the games).
