Do you feel anxious about having an online presence? Wherever I look, people are more than happy to post their faces, or God forbid, the faces of their children for the world to see. Meanwhile I feel dread the possibility of having a picture being taken with me in it, knowing that it will probably be uploaded online for anybody to access, and even if no one were to see it, it will be scraped by companies to train their AI. I can't wrap my head around as to why everyone is more than happy to do this. Every profile you have is a possible attack surface, every paper trail is another lead if you piss off the wrong person. Even if you're a good boy "without anything to hide", a leak is all it takes and now your data is a commodity for criminals. And when I tell people I don't want to use social media, I'm seen as a "freak". Why? Has the pot slowly been boiling for them, that they can't see any other way to live?
>>
>>1980 i dont do social media either. My reason is that I would feel a lot of pressure if I were to publicize my life, and there is no benefit, so I don't. You are talking about ai, leaks, crazies... Do ai and leaks really matter? The way to stop cybercriminals/scammers/billionaires is through regulation and law enforcement, not through boycotting. About crazy people, none of the people i know have a public or name+surname instagram, and it has features to manage what content is shown to who, so i dont think any of them have a reason to worry about that, despite using social media.
>>
>>1980 >I'm seen as a "freak". Why? Has the pot slowly been boiling for them, that they can't see any other way to live? They are retarded and gay.
>>
I don't really like social media myself. I have a small social media presence but even on things like Faceberg I never post my face. I really don't see the point in it and I don't think bragging to the void about things I have done is worth the footprint.
>>
I dont think in that way, im more like "the conpanies will have my informatons anyway" but i get really mad how people cant see that the trends and repentine mass os missinformation is somethin with an intention behind. Its like people forget that if 'something is free, its because yure the product'.

Do animals have conciousness? Nameless 01/22/2026 (Thu) 15:57:20 No. 36 [Reply]
Humans are technically animals, so what's preventing other animals from having conciousness? I heard someone say that they experience life like a dream.
>>
>should have left that shit in 5th grade why? that was one of the best times in my life continuous probing of environment and simultaneous action in response is the basis of all mechanical processing and thus thought. consciousness is the opposite of thought and occurs when thinking is otherwise impossible to create a new and separate "mind-space" to facilitate action. beings do not "have consciousness" as they "have" instincts, they are forced to become conscious of foreign objects to which there exist no instinctual reactions. in the case of humanity this has mainly manifested in the eye schema (as vision is the most remote sense) tho the ear is (was) returning (returned) tho this has somewhat reversed with bizarre effects. we have created a new world-environment (see from cliche to archetype "satellite imaging of the earth turns the planet into a stage to be programmed") which we are all collectively lost in
>>
What is stopping them for having consciousness ??? If we do, they likely do have too.
>>
If fish dont have consciousness explain the piraputanga. So crazy.
>>
>>76 each and every one of these "experiments" for animals learning language or math that i've seen eventually came down to very liberal interpretation by the handler/researcher, or downright just a human pressing the buttons. i tend to follow the same reasoning as >>41 but at the end of the day we cannot really prove anything related to something so subjective as the experience of being alive.
>>
>>73 "instinctual machines" dont exist among animals, maybe arthropods, spiders are kinda stupid imo I think defining consciousness as like "a state in which a creature is ready to change its pattern of behavior", a transitional state that when elongated out of necessity, i would say that tgat is where humans trump the rest of the animal kingdom, it doesnt have as much to do with attention span, pigs would have us beat, but its about chaining thoughts and figuring complicated things out in an involved manner, exposing the workings of the brain and not simply stopping for a moment and getting an answer from a background process if you understand what i am saying, if somebody tells you to calculate 5*12 you kind of just know that its 60, you dont need to think much because its not a large complex system, especially one that involves yourself as a moving part and you know, if we go with that consciousness appears to be a prerequisite for all animals that have place in the middle of the food chain, alternating between prey and predatory behavior, discovering behavior, migratory behavior.

Thoughts on 4chan's source code? https://github.com/4chan-org/4chan

>>
>>1850 Vichan is dead
>>
>>1850 I read a little of the source code back when it got leaked after the hack, and it is quite different from the conventional open source imageboards. The way something like Lynxchan works is that posts are stored in a database, and then when a user wants to see a thread, the program fetches those posts from the database and sends them to their browser, and caching is done between some of these layers to speed up the process. Yotsuba, for the vast majority of user requests, skips the database step entirely: each thread is just a file (.html) that is served statically and modified in-place whenever someone posts something; this is way faster than even caching database queries like Lynxchan does. Although the technique works, from a programmer perspective this is ugly, clunky, error-prone, unmaintainable, etc. so personally I don't think we are going to see established projects adopting it. Most imageboards don't need scale, so it's reasonable that people prioritize readability and maintainability. We are more likely to see someone writing an imageboard with LevelDB or Cassandra than re-implementing Yotsuba.
>>
https://github.com/Alehahaev404/4chan-main Use this repo instead. an official 4chan dev gave it a license basically saying do whatever you want with this source code. this leak will be on the internet forever they can't stop you from looking or using the code so I get why he gave it this license.

Types of MMO/RPG seen in old anime. Do they exist? Anonymous 06/08/2026 (Mon) 09:33:48 No. 1873 [Reply]
Whether it's Welcome to the N.H.K., .hack//SIGN, or something new like My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999, the MMO they play is always the same. It's medieval, comfy, and you can go on dungeons with your clan. When I look at MMO's that exist today, I see things like Black Desert or OSRS and such. I can't find anything comfy like in anime. I know WoW is a close contender, but I mean something eastern that isn't FF14. Do they even exist?
>>
>>1873 Lineage 2 maybe? It was quite popular where I lived in my childhood. It's medieval and I recall it pretty comfy.
>>
>>1873 unfortunately that doesn't exist irl, all the old classic mmorpg were very toxic grindfests. as the others say, those are idealized references to either ff11 or ff14 because those were/are the popular mmorpg in japan. if there is an isometric perspective, it's probably a reference to mu online, mabinogi, dofus, or one of the many, many smaller games that were the same. this is hard to explain because there isn't a modern equivalent, but the point of those games was grinding (mechanically following a spreadsheet or flowchart), there was little to no skill involved, games like that aren't mainstream anymore I don't want to be too negative, but you didn't want to be there, you didn't want to be the person sitting and mindlessly grinding mu or maplestory after school/work. just like how nowadays you don't want to be the person that spends all their waking day on tiktok. this is an unpopular opinion, but modern mmo like tarkov, arc raiders, marvel rivals, lol, or fortnite beat the shit out of the mmorpg of old, because they actually involve skill and have friendlier communities anyway, to answer your question, I think mabinogi still has fan-hosted servers, and maybe lineage or lineage 2. but anyone still grinding on a fan-made server 20 years after the fact is bound to be... not an anime character, to put it lightly
>>
>>1873 xanadu next looks pretty much like it, but it's not an mmo
>>
>>1873 ffxi private server is what i would recommend. eden, horizon, or catseye are the 3 most popular. sometime in the near™ future, retail ffxi will get a free trial in the style of ffxiv where you are only content limited not time limited. as someone who has played every final fantasy mainline other than 15 and 16, 11 is my favorite for the deep buildcrafting with the job/subjob system and the genuine sense of adventure and dangerous exploration. it is such a harsh game, but very rewarding imo. alternatively phantasy star online 1 on ephinea or phantasy star universe on clementine.
>>
>>1940 >retail ffxi will get a free trial in the style of ffxiv where you are only content limited not time limited. Where did you read that? The problem with FF11 is that the people who play on pservers are mentally unwell and unfriendly, at least if you look at the /vm/ thread. I like playing alone on retail but that's just me. >>1877 You can easily play on Linux. There's a very simple Lutris script to install the game and Windower. Bring a controller.

SITE REWRITE THREAD Anonymous Moderator 05/21/2025 (Wed) 19:48:42 No. 849 [Reply]
ohayou hikarins! as you can tell, the site rewrite is live! isn't it great? the dev team put lots of work and lots of love into this project so let's be sure to give them our thanks. in this thread, please report any issues, bugs, comments, questions, or concerns regarding the new site. i will also take the time to highlight some of the major changes and additions since Syrno is a lazy fuck refrained from doing so in the announcement. note that the rules have been updated, so be sure to give them another read. New Additions: - new imageboard software! as stated in the announcement, Hikari3 has changed from using Lynxchan to Koshi, a new imageboard software made in-house. the source code can be found here: https://github.com/hikari3-ch/koshi (that is, once the repo is made public). this in itself comes with many improvements, especially under the hood. i'm just a janny so i'm not qualified to list them all, but i can assure you Koshi is pretty great. - new and improved homepage! the homepage has been updated with a few new features. the new layout includes a new Featured Threads section, which is pretty self explanatory. hand-picked by (usually) Syrno. at the bottom, there is also an Other Threads section, which will randomly select threads from the SFW boards to showcase. 素敵ですね? - new 2D Ero board! a new board has been added for 2D ero images, aka hentai. please be sure to read the rules. note that posts made on this board do not appear in the Latest Posts or Other Threads section on the homepage. this board has been added in place of the Oekaki board, but don't worry! the ability to create your own masterpieces lives on. i'll talk about this later. - board statistics! https://files.catbox.moe/ewber2.PNG you can now check the board statistics, a panel that shows activity for each board. this can be found through the button directly to the left of the "Submit a Thread" button on the sidebar. - upgraded posting!

From looking online I see people recommending these, the SENNHEISER Professional IE 100 PRO. My caveat is I don't really like the wired headphones that have the silicone tips, I'd rather have the kind that are shaped like the Apple Earpods but I don't think that specific design is very common unfortunately. Image Search Anonymous 08/29/2026 (Sat) 19:42:03 No. 1958 [Reply]
Hello, For over a year, I've been experimenting with methods to perform image search. I experimented with embeddings, image descriptions, OCR, image hashes, and color profiles - lots of stuff. I spent a significant amount of time benchmarking these processes, evaluating whether it could scale to the order of 1e6 images hosted on a personal computer. I landed on tag search because it btfo'd everything else. It offers, >quick computations at 22img/s on a 1660ti gpu (double that on a 4060ti) >1ms search results >full text search index like elasticsearch is not required >negation/exclude search >extremely precise and flexible search queries Here is the website I created. 4taba had this really neat feature where you could reply to posts within that post, implemented as a little box containing the nested replies, and you could enable this type of reply with an email field option akin to sage. I liked it because it helped prevent off-topic posts from risking thread derailment. Hopefully somebody remembers it and knows what I mean, I don't know if I'm describing it very well. I miss that site.

Does anyone play Rain World? Trust me guys its a fun game, it might be a lot difficult, its awesome. If you haven't tried it, you should, its awesome, i dont want to explain EVERYTHING about it, but if you want to play this game blind i suggest not watching videos or listen to me. Welp let me explain what Rain World is, Rain World is a game where you play as a omnivorus slug cat in a broken ecosystem who has been seperated from their family. You might find animals such as Bat Flies and other creatures, but you have to survive dangerous predators such as lizards and vultures, aggresive scavengers, etc. Now this game not gonna lie has the most impressive AI ive ever seen, i mean... Have you seen the scavengers? They can trade, they can throw spears and etc. If you wanna see more of this game i suggest just play the game or watch a video in depth of the game and its flora and fauna. I got it on my Xbox One X, its only $24.99 USD on my xbox. Just play it, its awesome.

HTML: Can i learn? Anonymous 08/05/2026 (Wed) 19:13:45 No. 1942 [Reply]
Hello, Hikarins! Good morning/afternoon/evening. Do ya hikarins know about html? how did ya learn? im really interested. I wanted to organize and create my own site from 0, starting by learning html.
>>
>how did ya learn? I once came across a tutorial on how to make a website using Notepad, and for a while I was doing HTML using Windows 10 Notepad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWPMSSsVdPk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJ13lX20FqU This were the videos, and if you want to publish your website, you can use Neocities or Nekoweb. Please don't learn any JS or CSS frameworks, instead learn vanilla JS and CSS, learning frameworks is a waste of time, trust me, they won't do you any good, and you won't have a good time. You can also learn the HTTP protocol if you really want to understand how every website works under the hood
>>
>>1942 For HTML go to w3schools. For CSS also w3schools but i actually recommend Sass (https://sass-lang.com/) because it makes it easier to do composition of your styles. For javashit just stick to plain javashit. Don't bother with Web2.0 (Flask, Django, Spring, Ruby on Rails) unless you run a service for end user. Learn from websites on Neocities and Nekoweb how they code their website since you can just F12 and see it.
>>

sadgrl's guides are what i started with and can absolutely recommend them if you're gunning for just a personal page https://sadgrl.online/guides/ there's also this one: https://internetingishard.netlify.app/ you'll also need to think about how you want to host it. there's shared hostings and VPSes you can buy online, or you can just host from a computer you own physically. if going with latter, you'll wanna research a little into web servers, probably Nginx, and stuff like SSL. and ditto anon regarding Sass actually, it's pretty nice.
>>

Choosing which hobby to take, which job to get, which city to move to is juggling the inertias. Actually, it sounds already great if you're not under risk of death, especially imminent death. This only says it's only as good as long as some urgency doesn't interrupt anything. DUBS & SUBS 名無し 06/10/2025 (Tue) 17:23:35 No. 1482 [Reply]

Berserk 1997 has a damn fine dub. Most dubs where steve blum is a main character i enjoy. The big o, bebop, champloo, GTO, etc. off the top of my head, space dandy, jjba, hxh, FMA, hellsing, fooly cooly, black lagoon, death note have good dubs. While subs are preferable I wouldn't say that the average dub that comes out nowadays, or even as far back as the 90s were truly a sea of shit as a lot of people say. Most dubs were simply average, and the worst thing a dub can do in my eyes is go out of its way to change shit for no reason like the prison school/dragon maid dubs funimation did.

kris is the only example that comes to mind and its one of the best because in classic UTDR fashion theres meta storytelling and in this case kris and the player are clearly show to be 2 different entities now its not known whether kris knows that they live in a video game but they do know that the heart shaped object in their chest(the SOUL) is a different person that poses a threat to their evil plans as kris constantly rips us out of their chest so they can do bad stuff like open fountains everywhere to help kickstart the roaring and during chapter 4 kris decides to keep you for way longer than usual allowing you to sneak through thr house while they are on a phone call with a mysterious person twlling them what to do and when kris notices the soul they immediatley hit us with a can of chocolate or a hockey stick

it depends on the university itself, if you're going to an ivy league then you'd find it full of theory, which is beautiful but so challenging and unpractical but if you went to a john university you'd do some combination of hopefully modern development courses and gradate. but you need to familiarize yourself first with creating somewhat big programming projects if you wanna do well but wherever you go, the hardest thing about a CS degree imo is dealing with unnecessary courses that bloat your schedule

Karma Nameless 12/23/2025 (Tue) 20:06:35 No. 16 [Reply]
Do other Hikarins believe in karma? It's a concept I find hard to oppose and at the same time hard to really believe in or support. There could be collective karma, but sometimes it is downright cruel in cases like assault. At the same time, it is to me that's easily one that can get gullible people if reincarnation is a factor. I've seen that good people tend to be better off in life, in a strange way. Guess it could be placebo effect, or just coincidences. People who are worse off, tend to be at the top, but their life looks miserable to me.
>>
>The silver lining is that they are probably more broken inside and that they will probably mess up badly in the future, maybe karma is building up to bite them in the back? I still believe good will win, even if evil reigns for long. Like I said, If we want good to win, Then it's on us to push for it rather than just hoping that good will win. As Joshua Graham would say, "You can't except God to do all the work". It's on you to make that change.
>>
>>39 that's true, I heard of a parable where God condemned people who did not do much with their time, despite having the ability to do better, over time, I feel like I've realized that I have too money and too little time, it sucks
>>
what do you mean by karma? if we take the simplest popular definition - that its basically just cause and effect - why would you not believe in it? if a person does something bad then it makes world worse and then they have to live in a worse off world thats karma and there 0 superstitious elements in this defenition >>33 you say it as if thats all shes done in her life bully you and "win" whatever that means
>>
karma does traditionally mean causation but more importantly the unknown and persistant influence of conscious action on an unconscious environment and applied both to mental as physical actions. especially in buddhism mind is listed the sixth sense an thus part of the world-environment is made of unconscious mind-stuff (actually technically all of reality is "mind" and there is no mental-physical dualism). the description and confusion about good and bad and what happens from them are malformed interpretations of environmental transferrance (karma). every action is far more particular than "a good action", a bad action however while also particular is simply bad. evil is not bad but the form of being when bad has become good by posessing/deceiving acting consciousness (the maker of environments). to consciousness good always prevails and always to the 'detriment' (catastrophic rebuilding) of environment. bad (not evil which is consciousness manifest) prevails in proportion to the degree of diminishing consciousness.

So I've been working on a project to create a singing voice synthesizer I'm basing it on the description in Jordi Bonada's PhD thesis "Voice Processing and Synthesis by Performance Sampling and Spectral Models". The main goal of this project is to create a realistic traditional singing voice synthesizer (although integrating machine learning ideas into it could also be interesting), but side goal is also to recreate VOCALOID2 (actually this was the original goal, but the objective changed early on). Part of this task is to implement the expression system. I had long realized that there were two separate expression systems, but initially there had been some confusion between what belonged to which. Initially, I worked based on the expression system described in Jordi Bonada's 2008 PhD thesis, in Chapter 3, because this was by far the most complete description. For a long time, I had thought the expression briefly mentioned in the 2003 paper "Sample-Based Singing Voice Synthesizer Using Spectral Models and Source-Filter Decomposition", in part due to the reused figures. Because of this, I referred to this system as the "Bonada 2003" expression system, because that's where I thought it had been described, although only briefly. Later, I read parts of Jaume Ortola's 2001 Master's Degree. In there, some of the "2001" (or "Ortola 2001") expression should be described. Good detail is provided on the dynamics curves, which use Manfred Clynes' Predictive Amplitude Shaping algorithm. On the other hand, the pitch model is not really described, stating only: "The pitch contour of the singing voice has to be carefully generated in order to obtain a faithful synthesis. So we have designed a mathematical model for reproducing the smooth pitch transitions between notes. This model allows us to control the transition duration and the tuning deviations at the end and the beginning of the notes in accordance with the musical context.". Nothing about what happens in between the note transitions was stated at all, so this was a total mystery at the time. With what I know now, I am still not fully sure. The basic model is probably either flat lines or linear interpolation between the start and end. On the other hand, looking at the figures, besides the vibrato present in some of them, there is clearly something else as well. In one expired patent I read, the mean was subtracted from timbre variations and those were added on top of interpolated timbre, so perhaps something could be happening like that for pitch, although it is unclear then what would happen for the areas that don't correspond to stationary PhUs. Another possibility is some kind of random noise that is added. Actually, the figure looks suspiciously like something that has been linearly interpolated at the edges. You can clearly seen in the transitions and expressive parts, full pixel-level resolution; on the other hand, in these areas, it looks like straight line interpolation. So perhaps it is random noise that is interpolated. Anyway, this "mathematical model" in reference in many other places, but not described in any of them. For example, in "Sample-Based Singing Voice Synthesizer Using Spectral Models and Source-Filter Decomposition": "In the case of note transitions, the process is the same but whenever no template is specified, a pitch model is applied that overwrites the absolute pitch track of the score, like shown in Fig. 3, so to avoid pitch discontinuities. This pitch model has to be carefully generated to obtain a natural sounding pitch curve in the output synthesis. A mathematical model has been designed to produce smooth pitch transitions between notes and allow the control of some parameters like duration, shape and synchronization to phonetics and musical rhythm."

So recently I have been reading the expired VOCALOID patents, and made an effort to catalog and then read them all. I read https://patents.google.com/patent/JP2006330615A which describes the expression system described in Bonada's 2008 PhD thesis. Because of this, I am now calling this expression system the Bonada 2005 expression system. Interestingly, this finally described that mathematical model. The mathematical model for the legato transitions is not mentioned at all in Bonada's thesis, so I think it was replaced by the performance-sampling method for producing legato transitions that he also described in that thesis was used instead. Another interesting thing that this patent mentions is the addition of supplemental points before attacks and after releases. This was not mentioned at all in Bonada's thesis. Interestingly however, the thesis did provide the parameters for these points. Second, another very interesting thing is that in the patent, all of the parameters have fixed values, with the option to randomly scale them. On the other hand, in the thesis, the values were generated according to gaussian distributions. This must have been entirely different methods for generation and not just a writing quirk because, for example, the patents mentions that the points A and C are above the nominal pitch, and B below, while in the thesis, all points' gaussian distributions have a mean of zero. For this, along with other differences, such as the description of the supplemental point pitches being inconsistent with the given parameters in the thesis, I believe these two descriptions actually referred to two different iterations of this expression system, which I am now referring to as Bonada 2005 V1 and Bonada 2005 V2. This clears some things. On the other hand, there are also things where there is now more ambiguity, so more things to test. Other things are still unclear, such as how the point based model is used to generate the dynamics.

In the last post, I talked about some potential experiments I would have to do on the pitch/dynamics model for my VOCALOID2 recreation project. I had already programmed the base code for Bonada 2005 expression system, actually many months ago now. This was all in anticipation of the day I finally compare my system to samples that were actually generated by VOCALOID2. Well today I decided that day is now... and I was totally wrong about everything. Well not everything,- I was wrong about the expression system. It was actually the Ortola 2001 expression system that was still used in VOCALOID2 seemingly, except using a different dynamics model from the Predictive Amplitude Shaping algorithm that was used in VOCALOID1. Anyway, at first this made me even more concerned, because there was much less information about the Ortola 2001 expression system. One of the big mysteries was how the pitch was handled over the note duration. Well, as you can see in the attached image, it is very simple. In fact it is actually the simplest thing possible - it is a straight line. Another thing that concerned me was the dynamics model, since there was no description of this at all anywhere. But luckly, it proved to be incredibly simple. Simple enough that I was able to recreate it just by fiddling around for a couple hours in Jupyter notebook. In general, I feel like I have enough from the creators of VOCALOID that I have in a way gain an intuition for their thought process and what mathematical structures they favored. Below, I have presented in a demonstration of a partial recreation of the dynamics model and template-less portamento pitch transition model (my [orange] vs V2 [blue] portamento pictured). For an example of this thought process understanding, the first thing I tried for note dynamics decay was a formula of the form y*(e^-x - 1), which was inspired from the formula used for computing the source curve in the Excitation plus Resonance model, and it worked. Another example is the way the exponent is used in the portamento transition function, which was inspired in a way from the formula used for that same transition mentioned in the Bonada 2005 expression system patent (https://patents.google.com/patent/JP2006330615A).

I know a bunch, but right now I'm trying to learn Chinese, and it's weird. The grammar is easy, but the tones are griefing me, I think I can recognize them sometimes when listening but I don't feel like I'm pronouncing them right, and I don't have anyone to practice. And then there is the obvious issue of hanzi (the symbols), you can infer a lot from the radicals, but it is still pretty hard. I'm using anki right now and the hsk textbooks, but if anyone has resources like other books or tools, games, books for children and beginners, anything really, I would appreciate some pointers.

>>508 In theory it's considerably simpler than English or other European languages, but the Hanzi makes impossible to brute force a basic understanding (at least reading) in 1 month as is possible with English/others.
