>>11960 I only started getting into opera through listening to richard wagner. So far I've watched tristan und isolde, and the ring cycle from him. I enjoyed the ring cycle the most, even though its 14-16 hours long, it was a great spectacle to watch, with some the best classical music I've listened to. There's a very mesmerizing beauty to watching characters express their feelings through singing, makes their emotions feel so much more grand in scale.

>>12727 is it actually true that lord of the rings is very similar to the ring cycle?

I have never been to a full opera, although I am planning on doing so at some point. I have seen an operetta though, The Pirates of Penzance, done by a local theatre group. It was a lot of fun and very silly. snicker

>>12728 The only thing similar is that both entities feature a powerful ring that corrupts other people through stirring emotions of anger, greed, and hate in them, that's about it. Supposedly tolkien had no inspiration from the ring cycle, and that the similarities of a corrupting ring were just a coincidence. Both wagner and tolkien took inspiration from norse mythology for their projects though, which involve stories about rings of power, so that's why they share that connection.

>>11960 I’m listening to Le Nozze di Figaro right now, actually! I haven’t listened to much Wagner, but I really love Mozart. Carmen and The Barber of Seville are favourites of mine as well . . .
